Tuition fees are currently at an all-time high and young adults are now looking for other options instead of a university degree to further their education.
A growing amount of students that are going to university are revealing they are dissatisfied with their education because they feel they are not getting value for money. This is just one of the reasons that many young adults are looking into apprenticeships instead. Students are now seeing these schemes as a better way of continuing their education, the negative stigma that apprenticeship schemes have had are quickly changing. Students are seeing apprenticeships as being able to get the same, if not better qualifications, without having the enormous amount of debt.
An article published in the Independent in February stated that nearly 40% of graduates are still unemployed six months after leaving university. After a year, a quarter of those are still unemployed. Apprenticeships allow students to get on-the-job experience at the same time as working towards their qualification; already gaining a head start by having previous experience. Students have the opportunity to use what they have learnt and put it into practice. Results from the NAS (National Apprenticeship Service) show that 85% of apprentices stay in employment; 64% of which remain with the same employer.
It’s not just the student's attitudes which are changing, many companies are now realising the huge benefits of running apprenticeship schemes. During National Apprenticeship Week in March over 20,000 new apprentice jobs were guaranteed by leading employers. The Department for Education has stated that almost 50,000 teenagers went into a work-based training course during March 2013-2014, up 8,000 on the previous year. Qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.
If the fact that a debt-free qualification isn't a good enough reason to go for an apprenticeship, research also shows that “graduates of apprentice programmes earn, on average, over £100,000 more throughout their lifetime then other employees.” It is now a good time for the younger generation researching into what their next step will be, to look at apprenticeships. There are apprenticeships in over 170 industries and approximately 1500 job roles. Popular areas for apprenticeship schemes are health and care, engineering/construction and retail.
